Zero Tolerance for Mobile Communication Devices & Other Electronic Devices

* The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) will be implementing a comprehensive cell phone and mobile device policy that will take effect on October 1, 2010 (policy #1001-2010-1). This policy further clarifies and expands what was stated in previous MTA-issues bulletins and memos about cell phone use and will apply to ALL MTA EMPLOYEES (except for the MTA Police Department).
In particular, this policy addresses the use of cell phones and other mobile electronic devices:
1. While operating revenue and non-revenue vehicles,
2. While directly serving the riding the public,
3. In safety-sensitive areas, and
4. While maintaining MTA equipment.
As a courtesy, the Unions are being provided a copy of the policy for review and comment. Please review the policy handed out to you.
** Please be aware that according to a recent article appearing in the Baltimore Sun regarding broken fare boxes, MTA has plans to use supervisors, mystery riders, covert monitors, and other techniques in an attempt to catch operators acting badly.
